Conditions of Using NHATS Public Use Data


By registering to download public use data files, you agree that you, the User, will not:

  • attempt to identify study participants.
  • transfer NHATS Public Use data to anyone other than staff or students that you have direct responsibility for. Research collaborators and persons not under your direct supervision are required to submit separate applications in order to obtain access to NHATS public data files.
  • allow others to use your username and password to access this site.

In addition, you, the User, agree to:

  • use the data only for scientific research purposes and only for aggregate statistical reporting
  • report immediately any disclosure of study participant identity (NHATSdata@Westat.com)
  • report any flaw or errors in the data or documentation (NHATSdata@Westat.com)
  • include the citations below in any publications or research reports based on the NHATS Public Use data:
    • In text: The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (grant number NIA U01AG032947) through a cooperative agreement with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
    • In references: NHATS Public Use Data. (Insert Round or Rounds), sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (grant number NIA U01AG032947) through a cooperative agreement with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Available at www.nhats.org.
  • notify NHATS of publications based on NHATS Public Use Data by email (NHATSdata@Westat.com). Include: authors, title of paper, title of journal, book or other venue where published, date of publication.
  • destroy any downloaded Public Use data file, as well as any derived data files, if requested to do so.

Users are required to notify NHATS about changes in their electronic mail address, postal address, telephone number, organizational affiliation or organizational status by contacting NHATSdata@westat.com.
